The top boy and girl from 56 schools in Council District 14 were honored Saturday morning, along with their families, at an annual brunch and awards ceremony at the Los Angeles Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles.

The “Adelante (Onward) Awards” is hosted by Councilmember Huizar, who started the event 13 years ago while serving on the LAUSD school board to recognize and encourage young students who are achieving academic excellence. Since its launch, the Adelante Awards has honored more than 1,100 students.

“I created the Adelante Awards to recognize academic excellence while encouraging students and their families to continue on the path they are on so they can reach their God-given potential and live successful lives,” said Councilmember Huizar. “After 13 years and more than 1,100 students honored, nothing gives me greater joy than hearing from a former Adelanterecipient that this award inspired them to achieve their dreams and that is why we do this year in and year out.”
