Are you tired of the sickly smell of rotting meat that frequently blankets Boyle Heights? Have you wondered who is responsible and not known how to register a complaint? Now you can take action to clean up this pollution so Boyle Heights can breathe easier.
Councilmember Huizar wrote a letter to the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) requesting a meeting in Boyle Heights. The public meeting will be held on Monday, October 23 at 6 p.m. at Resurrection Church.
New rules are proposed to reduce the odors coming from five “rendering” plants in the Vernon area. These plants take animal byproducts from slaughterhouses and roadkill and cook them down for disposal and use in pet food, cosmetics, fertilizer and other products. Smells are strongest when the operations are not fully enclosed-- meat and grease left outside after it’s delivered, cooking and processing, and pooling of dirty water or wastewater treatment.
AQMD proposes a set of operational standards to reduce odors and provide immediate relief, and in the next 2-4 years, all facilities must be enclosed, as a permanent solution.
AQMD first proposed these rules more than three years ago. The effort stalled for two years under pressure from the industry -- and “in order to focus on other priorities.” Now the rules are finally scheduled to be voted on by the AQMD Governing Board on Friday, November 3.
If you want to help get the smell out of Boyle Heights, AQMD needs to hear from you. You can:
- Join Councilman Jose Huizar and Resurrection Church on Monday, October 23 at 6 p.m. to ask your questions and share your concerns with AQMD experts. Comment cards will be provided so that you can get your comment on the record. The Church is at 3324 Opal St in Boyle Heights.
- Email the AQMD board members at firstname.lastname@example.org, cc to email@example.com, on or before Tuesday, October 24.
- Testify in person on Friday, November 3, at 9:00 a.m., in the Auditorium at AQMD Headquarters, 21865 Copley Drive, in Diamond Bar.
