Ascot Hills Park Green Team Work Party

Ascot Hills Park Green Team Work Party

We should take note that this month we will be starting the sixth year of volunteer service to the park. In May 2011, we started signing up volunteers and then in June 2011 we held two clean up work parties to prepare for the Grand Opening ceremonies that commemorated the completion of the park infrastructure under State Proposition 40 park bonds. Since then we have held our work parties at least one per month. Our focus has been on enhancing and restoring wildlife habitat, trail maintenance, and education.  Some of the dedicated volunteers that have been coming out since the beginning can reflect on how much progress we have made. While others will lament we have much more to do. We hope that those who have been helping out from the beginning, and those who have joined in later will continue to support our efforts, realizing that we are making a difference.

This month our tasks will include watering plants that were recently installed in April. They need a deep watering to help them get through the summer. We also have to continue with pulling out invasive weeds such as Castor Bean and Russian Thistle. They are easier to pull when young, and their removal before their seed is dispersed is key to reducing their presence s. Both planting and weeding are helping to bring back native plants and improve wildlife habitat in the park.

Please mark your calendars, ask friends, family and others to come. We may have a lower turnout since LAUSD schools will be on summer recess. So, we will be working in small groups focusing on a specific task, but still have time to share our knowledge and discuss our visions for the park.
