For the 81st consecutive year, Boyle Heights’ Roosevelt High and East L.A.’s Garfield High squared off on the gridiron this past Friday for “The East L.A. Classic.” Prior to the game, Councilmember Huizar recognized the academic excellence of 20 students from both schools, handing out $20,000 in scholarship funds through his annual Excellence in Education awards.

The game, which took place at East L.A. College’s Weingart Stadium, packed them in as the two schools vied for Los Angeles eastside bragging rights.

“The ‘East L.A. Classic’ is entrenched in the storied history and tradition of the great and forever connected communities of Boyle Heights and East L.A.,” said Councilmember Huizar. “For generations, families and friends have come to this game to cheer Roosevelt and Garfield to victory. Our Excellence in Education Award Scholarships allow us to recognize each school’s Academic All-Stars before the football stars hit the gridiron. I applaud all our winners on and off the field for their success and commitment.”
