The City Council voted to give instructions to write a citywide sidewalk vending ordinance. The framework seeks middle ground in creating a fair system to allow thousands of hardworking mostly immigrant, low-income workers come out of the shadows and feed their families while ensuring public health, safety, regulation and enforcement. The City Council voted to create an appeal process for local businesses based on health and safety concerns. Councilmember Huizar and Councilmember Price first introduced the motion to legalize sidewalk vending in 2013. The City Attorney’s Office will draft the ordinance before presenting it to the full City Council.
