The Los Angeles City Council took a leap forward by establishing the Executive Task Force on Youth Development. Its mandate will be the outlining of specific steps and funding requirements necessary to implement a cohesive strategy toward youth development. In fact, this marks the first step toward creating a Department of Youth Development.

I co-authored this motion with Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez because we need to invest in programs in underserved areas - programs that will better prepare young people for higher education and the workforce. They are one of our greatest assets, and they deserve a seat at the table when it comes to the creation of this program.

As such, the committee will include city officials, representatives from youth-service organizations, and young people willing to advocate for their own concerns. I am proud of the City Council for taking this first step toward a permanent Youth Development Department.
